t’s the day after Thanksgiving, and all through the house, not a creature is stirring because they’re all stuffed full of turkey and experiencing tryptophan-induced narcolepsy.

In spite of all the alarmist stories you may have read about what a bad year it has been at the box office, the movies themselves have been quite good, and even exceptional in many cases.

The film everyone wants to see right now is “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” an adaptation of the fourth book in J.K. Rowling’s international bestsellers about a certain boy magician and his battle against the forces of darkness. It is an excellent choice if you seek family-oriented fare.

Smart, visually inventive, scary and boasting a first-rate supporting cast of scene-stealing British veterans, the PG-13 film is about puberty as much as magic and may be too intense for the very young. But this is one of the best in the series. You also can see Harry and company in IMAX at Jordan’s Furniture in Reading and Natick.

One of the holiday contenders virtually slain by the almighty Harry is “Zathura,” which is sad because this outer-space adventure is based on a book by Rhode Island native Chris Van Allsburg (“Jumanji,” “The Polar Express”) and is the best adaptation of his work yet. It features a talented young cast and smart direction by Jon Favreau (“Swingers,” “Elf”).
