You'd think he'd be too busy deflecting hurricanes, fomenting assassination plots against South American presidents and praying for the deaths of liberal Supreme Court justices to pronounce little Dover, Pa. a Godforsaken place. But nothing escapes the attention of the great and powerful Robertson. He really is like the Wizard of Oz, putting his own inane words in the mouth of God.

Mr. Robertson is probably the only guy on TV who can make prayer look painful. Why is his loopy show still on the air in York County? No wait. That would be censorship. But maybe they could move it over to Comedy Central?

Amazingly, voters chose Mr. Rambler, despite the fact that he pleaded guilty in 1996 to extortion in a scheme where he solicited sexually explicit photos in swingers magazines and then demanded $50 to keep him from publishing the photos.

He's now a pastor, and says he's a changed man. That's good — but there are some questions about whether he's legally allowed to hold office.

Convictions for “infamous crimes” are supposed to disqualify you from office, but District Attorney Stan Rebert says he's not sure if this one qualifies. Whether it's infamous is a question for the courts, but it sure seems sleazy to us, intentionally victimizing others.

A complaint was filed about Mr. Rambler's qualifications before the election, but now Mr. Rebert says he's not sure if that's valid or if another complain must be filed. This is a question that really ought to be settled before Rambler's allowed to take office.

You have to wonder about the caliber of elective leadership in Wrightsville. A few years ago the tax collector was on house arrest for a federal bank fraud charge. A school board member was convicted of indecent assault and corruption of a minor. And most recently, a borough council member was sentenced to jail in Delaware for molesting his best friend's 15-year-old daughter.

That perfectly describes Russell Nigro. The “place” was his Supreme Court seat. The time was Tuesday's election. Turns out he and fellow justice Sandra Newman were the only ones on the ballot for voters angry about the legislative and judicial pay raises to hold accountable.

It's probably not really fair to him. He never ruled on the unvouchered expenses that so infuriated citizens. But that's politics. Sometimes you wind up being the sacrificial lamb for something that isn't really — or wholly — your fault.
