This weekend you can take the time to visit The Birkenhead Brewery, situated in Stanford, a charming Cape Victorian town, on the banks of the Klein River.

The town is the gateway to the Fynbos Ecotourism Route, which covers the Southern Overberg. It is one of the few villages in South Africa where the common (village market square) has remained undeveloped.

This, as well as the architectural significance of the houses built before 1940, is one of the reasons why the central parts of Stanford will soon be proclaimed a national conservation area.

On Sundays the restaurant serves buffet lunches. There are jumping castles available to keep the young ones occupied. Booking is essential for larger groups. Tel: 028-341-0183.
