If you're a fan of Club Indigo or Loft 150, you'll feel pretty comfortable in the new bar, which is also aimed at Wichita's younger clubgoers.
"The old owner focused on classic rock. The problem is, downtown you have a lot of 22- to 28-year-olds walking around, and they don't want to hear old-time rock and roll," said the bar's new proprietor, Jason Gordon.
My Room features live music on the weekends, with local acts like Monterey Jack, Klatch and Man Vs. Rocket signed on for the first month. Gordon's own band, Jump the Gun, is set to play Sept. 22.
Most of the bands booked for the weekends will play cover tunes, but Gordon said he'd like to devote Thursdays to bands that perform original music.
We're not talking the posh, pretentious setup of Bed, the bar where Carrie tried to get over being broken up with via Post-It note in an episode of "Sex and the City." Instead, Gordon imagined a 20-something dude's place.
The foyer is decorated with oversize posters from movies like "Scarface" and "Swingers." There are Playboy pinups on the ceiling (naughty bits covered, of course).
The resident of My Room likes to party, too. He's got empty beer and vodka bottles on his bedside table and an ashtray full of butts. Sadly, his box of condoms disappeared after opening night.
Gordon wants to be clear that the bed is just a prop. If anyone is tempted to use it, the bouncers will tell them to hit the pavement. Or they might offer a ride to another bar. One of Gordon's marketing tools is an Old Town taxi, marked with the My Room logo. It's free, and bar-hoppers don't have to be on their way to Gordon's bar to catch a lift.
"If they pick someone up from Flashbacks, my driver will say. 'I'm taking you to My Room, correct?' If they say, 'No, we're going to Indigo,' that's fine, as long as they see the logo when they get in the car."
